WARNING: This post will contain spoilers from the season 8 finale, so if you haven't seen it, don't read any further unless you want to be spoiled.
Last night was the season eight finale of
Grey's Anatomy and just like millions of others, I watched knowing that something bad was going happen. You see, it's been known for a while that someone on the show was going to die and that the person would be a beloved character, so when fan favorite Lexie Grey (played wonderfully by Chyler Leigh) didn't survive her injuries from the plane crash early on in the episode, I knew people were going to be upset and pissed off. During and after the show, fans of the show/character took to Twitter to express their anger, especially towards the show's creator Shonda Rhimes. I'll talk about that later in the post, but first, I want to express my opinion about the season finale in regards to the death of Dr. Lexie Grey.
Despite Lexie's death and the episode ending on a major cliffhanger, I really enjoyed the season finale. I cried. I laughed. I cried some more and when a show can make me tear up or even cry, it's a good thing. More importantly, it made me think. Life can and does change in an instant. Everyone has experienced something that changed their life in an instant. I know I have and last night's episode reminded me of that because it can and, most likely, will happen again. It makes me want to tell everyone who is important to me just how much they mean to me because I'd hate for one of those life changing moments to occur and someone not knowing how I exaclty felt about them.
As I said earlier in this post, people were upset about Lexie being the one to die and it's okay to express those feelings on Twitter and/or Facebook. I, myself, was upset. What isn't okay is to take to those social networking sites and write things directed at Rhimes such as "fuck you", "I hate you" and even saying that she needs to be punched in the face. People are angry and I get that, but there's no reason for some of the reactions by viewers/fans. That's my opinion and I know people are going to disagree with it and that's fine because not everyone is going to feel the way I do.
After the west coast airing, Rhimes
tweeted a statement regarding the season finale. In the statement, she confirmed Lexie's death and the departure of Teddy Altman (Kim Raver). She made it clear that her decision to kill off Lexie wasn't an easy one and I don't doubt her. What makes me feel better about it is that her decision was not based on any bad blood between Rhimes and Leigh, but instead, it was a mutual decision that they came to after a long and probably emotional discussion.
You can read her full statement below:
"Okay. Callie said it best tonight: Life changes in an instant. Turns on a dime.
This finale was incredibly hard to write. I did not enjoy it. It made me sick and it made me sad. We end the season not knowing ANYTHING about the future. Except for two things. We know we are definitely saying goodbye to two of my favorite people: Chyler Leigh (Lexie) and Kim Raver (Teddy).
I know this season’s finale had some surprises for viewers and the exit of Kim Raver was one of the big ones. But Kim’s series option was up and she was ready to give Teddy Altman a much-needed vacation. It’s been a pleasure working with someone as talented and funny and kind as Kim; everyone is going to miss her terribly. I like to imagine that Teddy is still out there in the Grey’s Anatomy universe, running Army Medical Command and building a new life.
I love Chyler and I love the character of Lexie Grey. She was an important member of my Grey's family. This was not an easy decision. But it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together. We had a lot of thoughtful discussion about it and ultimately we both decided this was the right time for her character's journey to end. As far as I'm concerned Chyler will always remain a part of the Shondaland family and I can't wait to work with her again in the future.
I'd write more but I'm honestly too sad. I don't like life changing in an instant and turning on a dime.
Thanks for watching Season Eight. We are, as always, grateful that you joined us for the ride."
To Shonda Rhimes, thank you and I'll be there for the season nine ride.
This is all I can handle for now. Most likely, I'll write up another post concerning the rest of the characters in the season finale and what I think will happen in season nine.
