My #1 Movie to Watch on New Year's Eve: 200 Cigarettes (1999)

200 Cigarettes (1999)
"It's 11:59 on New Year's Eve. Do you know where your date is?"

Directed by Risa Bramon Garcia
Starring: Paul Rudd, Courtney Love, Dave Chappelle...just to name a few

"A collection of twentysomethings try to cope with relationships, loneliness, desire and their individual neuroses." (IMDB.com)

I know that this comedy didn't get the best reviews, but I don't care because I've loved it ever since I saw it in the theater when it was released in 1999. I just wish it would be released on Blu-Ray or at the very least, re-released on DVD because I need to buy a copy.

RiffTrax Fans: The Twilight Saga is the Worst Movie of All Time

RiffTrax, a website from the guys of Mystery Science Theater 3000, put a question to their fans, what is the worst movie of all time? Well, 500,000 votes later, they got their answer...The Twilight Saga with 35,593 votes. Something tells me that all the Twihards out there are going to pissed off when they see the results of the poll.

This is how RiffTrax describes The Twilight Saga: "Mumble mumble mumble moon eyes. Mumble mumble mumble mumble lay in a field. Mumble mumble mumble perv on a baby. Mumble." Pretty accurate, if you ask me.

If you missed a chance to vote, I know I did, then don't worry because they are going to do it again next year. Twilight has a pretty good chance of remaining #1 unless a film comes along in 2013 that's worse. Is it possible? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Here's the top 10 as chosen by the fans (for the full list, click the link above):

#10: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
#9: Son of the Mask
#8: Jack and Jill
#7: Battlefield Earth
#6: Super Mario Bros.
#5: The Last Airbender
#4: Spider-Man 3
#3: Catwoman
#2: Batman and Robin
#1: The Twilight Saga

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #25: Silent Night (2012)

Silent Night (2012)
"He's knows who's been naughty."

Directed by Steven C. Miller
Starring: Jaime King, Malcolm McDowell and Donal Logue

"The police force of a remote Midwestern town search for a killer Santa Claus who is picking off citizens on Christmas Eve." (IMDB.com)

Not the best Christmas horror movie out there, but this remake to 1984's Silent Night, Deadly Night would be one to check out if you want to see some good kills...other than that, stick with the original.

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #24: Christmas Vacation (1989)

Christmas Vacation (1989)
"Yule crack up!"

Directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik
Starring: Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Juliette Lewis, Johnny Galecki and Randy Quaid

"The Griswold family's plans for a big family Christmas predictably turn into a big disaster." (IMDB.com)

Another Christmas flick that I watch every year! Just like with A Christmas Story, stay far away from the sequel!

Sunday, December 23, 2012

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #23: A Christmas Stroy (1983)

A Christmas Story (1983)
"A tribute to the original, traditional, one-hundred-percent, red-blooded, two-fisted, all-american Christmas..."

Directed by Bob Clark
Starring: Peter Billingsley, Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillion

"Ralphie has to convince his parents, teachers, and Santa that a Red Ryder B.B. gun really is the perfect gift for the 1940s." (IMDB.com)

A movie that never gets old seeing as I watch it every year around Christmas! Stay away from the poorly done so-called "official sequel" that was released just a few weeks ago.

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #22: Gremlins

Gremlins (1984)
"What you see...isn't always what you get."

Directed by Joe Dante
Starring: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates and Corey Feldman

"A boy inadvertantly breaks 3 important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town." (IMDB.com)

A movie that takes me back to my childhood...I remember thinking Gizmo was cute, but when the Gremlins came on the screen, I hid behind a chair while I watched.

The sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, is really good as well and deserves a watch.

What Not to Watch This Christmas: Black Christmas (2006)

Black Christmas (2006)
"This holiday season, the slay ride begins."

Directed by Glen Morgan
Starring: Katie Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg and Mary Elizabeth Winstead

"An escaped maniac returns to his childhood home on Christmas Eve, which is now a sorority house, and begins to murder the sorority sisters one by one." (IMDB.com)

Being a fan of horror films, I decided to give this one a try by going to the theater to watch it when it was released on Christmas Day in 2006. What a mistake that was! It's a poorly done remake of the 1974 horror classic Black Christmas. Unlike the original, the remake had unlikeable characters and seemed to rely on gore in order to, hopefully, draw attention away from the ridiculous plot/story. For some, I'm sure it worked, but it didn't with me. My advice? Stick with the original.

Trailer: A Haunted House

Gotta admit, this looks a lot better than Scary Movie 5. It'll make its way to theaters on January 11th.

Trailer: Scary Movie 5

If you liked what you saw in the trailer, then look for the movie when it hits theaters on April 12th.

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #21: Jingle All the Way (1996)

Jingle All the Way (1996)
"Two dads, one toy, no prisoners."

Directed by Brian Levant
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sinbad, Phil Hartman and Rita Wilson

"A harried father decides to dream the impossible dream, to get that year's hot toy for his son just before Christmas Day." (IMDB.com)

Don't get me wrong, Jingle All the Way will never win any awards, but it's just a fun movie because it's so ridiculous. How ridiculous you ask? Schwarzenegger punches a reindeer! I mean, c'mon, it doesn't get much better than that!

The Polar Express (2004)

What Not to Watch This Christmas: A Christmas Story 2 (2012)

A Christmas Story 2 (2012)
"Peace, love and misunderstandings."

Directed by Brian Levant
Starring: Daniel Stern, Braeden Lemasters and Stacey Travis

"The original, traditional, one-hundred-percent, red-blooded, two-fisted, All-American Christmas continues five years later with Ralphie, Randy, mom and the Old Man. When 15 year-old Ralphie accidentally wrecks his dream car before even getting it off the lot, he and his friends Flick and Schwartz band together to raise the money to fix it by Christmas Eve - before the car dealer tells the Old Man. They all get their (first!) jobs, but run into trouble at every turn. When things look most bleak, Ralphie finds the true meaning of Christmas with the help of his family and his friends." (RottenTomatoes.com)

My curiosity got the best of me because I sat down and watch A Christmas Story 2 a few days ago and I wish I hadn't given in because while it isn't the worst Christmas movie out there (Christmas Vacation 2 gets that honor), it's a pretty bad and boring direct-to-DVD movie. For one, I think I may have laughed and/or smiled maybe two or three times. Several scenes are taken right from the original and recycled in this so-called "official sequel". A Christmas Story had heart and I didn't get that feeling from the sequel. My advice, stick with original which, in my opinion, is a Christmas classic!

Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
"The most famous reindeer of all!"

Grey's Anatomy Spoiler: Ausiello's Scoop on Episode 9 (Run, Baby, Run)...Calzona Included!

Michael Ausiello, over at TVLine.com, gave Grey's Anatomy fans some scoop on the upcoming episode (ep. 9: Run, Baby, Run) in regards to Calzona (Callie and Arizona).

Read below to read the somewhat spoilerish news or leave this page now if you don't want to know anything!

Question: Got any scoop on Grey’s Anatomy, preferably something to do with Callie and Arizona? —NG
Ausiello: I almost forgot! Callie brings Arizona’s 2012 Pity Party World Tour to an abrupt end on Thursday, in the episode’s most rousing moment. You’ll applaud, you’ll laugh, you’ll want to hand Sara Ramirez an Emmy yourself.
After reading this news, I don't have a clue as to what Callie does to bring Arizona out of her "pity party", but I can't wait to find out! I do know that Shonda Rhimes wrote on her WhoSay that there are some "adorable and sweet" moments between the couple during the episode which will lead to "something good." Again, I can't wait!

Reading news like this just makes me even more excited for episode 10, which will most likely air after the long winter hiatus, for the Calzona moment that Shonda has said is her favorite of the season...so far.

Ausiello also had some news concerning the rest of the crew.
Question: Big Grey’s Anatomy fan. Tell me you have something good about Meredith and Derek. —Tia
Ausiello: First off, let me tell you something good about Grey’s Anatomy in general — I’ve seen Thursday’s episode and it’s really, really terrific. Best of the season by far. Some highlights: On the eve of her wedding, Bailey’s an emotional basket case — equal parts Tasmanian Devil and Bridezilla; Owen and Cristina face a turning point in their relationship, triggered in part by the arrival of their divorce papers; April and Jackson go to great (read: hilarious) lengths to avoid attending Bailey’s nuptials together; Neve Campbell continues to prove that she was perfectly cast as Derek’s sis; and getting back to your question, Derek and Meredith share one of my favorite scenes together ever — a wholly uneventful husband-and-wifey exchange at the hospital that will make you swoon.
From the sounds of it, this should be a good episode and I look forward to watching it this Thursday night.

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #11: Home Alone (1990)

Home Alone (1990)
"A family comedy without the family."

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #10: Go (1999)

Go (1999)
"Life begins at 3am."

Directed by Doug Liman
Starring: Sarah Polley, Katie Holmes, Scott Wolf, Jay Mohr and Desmond Askew

"Events conspire to bring together a disparate group of characters in unexpected ways as a day in their intertwining Gen-X lives plays out in director Doug Liman's fast-paced follow-up to Swingers starring Sarah Polley and Katie Holmes. Beginning with a supermarket clerk who gets in over her head trying to score quick cash, the story then moves to the adventures of her drug-dealing co-worker and finally to a pair of actors working off a drug rap." (Netflix)

Not only does Go take place on Christmas Eve, but it's a movie I haven't recommended the last two years I've done these type of recommendations, so that is why I'm recommending it this year. Furthermore, it's just a great movie with a great soundtrack. I do issue this warning, though...it's not a movie to watch with your family. Instead, either watch with some friends or by yourself.

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #9: Die Hard (1988)

Die Hard (1988)
"40 stories of sheer adventure!"

Starring: Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman and Bonnie Bedelia

"John McClane, officer of the NYPD, tries to save wife Holly Gennaro and several others, taken hostage by German terrorist Hans Gruber during a Christmas party at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles." (IMDB.com)

Not only do I consider Die Hard to be one of my favorite movies to watch this time of year, but I also consider it to be one of the best action movies of all-time! Don't agree with me? That's fine, but you're wrong. :)

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #8: Just Friends (2005)

Just Friends (2005)
"He loves her. She loves him not."

Directed by Roger Kumble

"While visiting his hometown during Christmas, a man comes face-to-face with his old high school crush whom he was best friends with -- a woman whose rejection of him turned him into a ferocious womanizer." (IMDB.com)

This is a Christmas romantic comedy that is hilarious and sweet. Anna Faris steals every scene she's in and her performance is reason enough to check it out!

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #6: Black Christmas (1974)

Black Christmas (1974)
"'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, a creature was stirring."

Directed by Bob Clark
Starring: Olivia Hussey, Margot Kidder and John Saxon

"A sorority house is terrorized by a stranger who makes frightening phone calls and then murders the sorority sisters during Christmas break." (IMDB.com)

Being a horror fan, I just had to include a Christmas themed horror film...in fact, a second one will most likely make an appearance later this month! Despite the fact that Black Christmas can be considered one the first slasher films (it influenced John Carpenter when he made Halloween four years later), I see the film as be underrated and sometimes overlooked which is a shame because it's a horror classic. See it, but don't rush to see the 2006 remake.

What Not to Watch This Christmas: "Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure" (2003)

Since I'll be recommending 31 Christmas movies this month, I figured that I would also mention a few movies throughout the month that you should avoid watching this Christmas.

The first flick I've chosen is a sequel to a Christmas favorite of mine. This TV movie never should've been made...it's that bad.

Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure (2003)
"What could go wrong in paradise? Just about anything!"

Directed by Nick Marck
Starring: Randy Quaid, Miriam Flynn and Dana Barron

"Though Eddie's fired right at Christmastime, his boss sends him and his family on a South Pacific vacation, hoping Eddie won't sue him after being bitten by a lab monkey. When the Tuttle family winds up trapped on a tropical island, however, Eddie manages to provide for everyone and prove himself a real man." (samjjones via IMDB.com)

Not only am I a huge fan of Christmas Vacation (1989), I actually enjoy all the movies in the Vacation series. However, this one was a disaster! I don't remember laughing once because it just wasn't funny. Not only that, but the script and directing was bad. The only good thing about it was the fact that Dana Barron reprises her role as Audrey Griswold from Vacation (1983).

If you find yourself thinking about checking it out, please reconsider, but if you just have to watch it, then you might want to have some alcohol nearby.

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #5: Scrooged (1988)

Scrooged (1988)
"The spirits will move you in odd and hysterical ways."

Directed by Richard Donner
Starring: Bill Murray, Karen Allen, Bobcat Goldthwait, Alfre Woodard and Robert Mitchum

"A cynically selfish TV executive gets haunted by three spirits bearing lessons on Christmas Eve." (IMDB.com)

Another take on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol which features an awesome opening scene with Lee Majors. If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. :)

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #4: Trading Places (1983)

Trading Places (1983)
"They're just not getting rich... They're getting even."

Directed by John Landis
Starring: Eddie Murphy, Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis

"A snobbish investor and a wily street con artist find their positions reversed as part of a bet by two callous millionaires." (IMDB.com)

Some people out there may argue that Trading Places (one of Murphy's best flicks!) isn't a Christmas movie, but I think it is because part of it takes place during Christmas and New Year's. Plus, Dan Aykroyd crashes a party in a Santa suit. Therefore, I believe it qualifies as a Christmas movie and not only that, it's just a hilarious movie that everyone needs to see.

Forbes: Eddie Murphy Tops Our List of Hollywood's Most Overpaid Actors

Ouch!

According to Forbes, Eddie Murphy tops the list of the most overpaid actors in Hollywood. Three of Murphy's films (Meet Dave, Imagine That and A Thousand Words) were flops. Last year's Tower Heist may have earned more than his previous films with $153 million, but the budget for it was $75 million and Forbes points out that in order for a film to make a profit, a movie needs to basically make twice that in ticket sales and of course, all the money spent on marketing. With all that information, Forbes estimates that for every $1 Murphy was paid, the return average at the box office was $2.30.

How did Forbes come up with their list? Good question and here's the answer from Forbes themselves:
"To compile our list, we used data on actors’ earnings gathered for our Celebrity 100 list. Box office grosses and budget estimates are from Box Office Mojo. We looked at the last three films each actor starred in over the last three years that opened in more than 2,000 theaters, calculating the return on investment for the studios who pay his (or her) salary."
Katherine Heigl came in at second with a return average of $3.40 for every $1 she was paid for her last three films (which included the One for the Money which made only $37 million while the film budget was $40 million).

Reese Witherspoon is ranked third. The return average at the box office for every $1 she was paid was $3.90. How Do You Know had an extremely high budget of $120 million (most of that went to the salaries of Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson) only grossed $49 million.

Ranked fourth is Sandra Bullock. For every $1 she was paid, the box office return was $5. All About Steve and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close were both box office duds which is basically why she's ranked in the top five.

Jack Black enters the list at number five. For every $1 he was paid, the average box office return was $5.20. He was in The Big Year with Owen Wilson and Steve Martin, but those big stars weren't enough to draw people to watch their film because it only earned $7 million at the box office.

Here is the complete top 10:

#1: Eddie Murphy
#2: Katherine Heigl
#3: Resse Witherspoon
#4: Sandra Bullock
#5: Jack Black
#6: Nicolas Cage (Returns $6 for every $1 paid)
#7: Adam Sandler (Returns $6.30 for every $1 paid)
#8: Denzel Washington (Returns $6.30 for every $1 paid)
#9: Ben Stiller (Returns $6.50 for every $1 paid)
#10: Sarah Jessica Parker (Returns $7 for every $1 paid)

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #3: Joyeux Noel (2005)

Joyeux Noel (2005)
"Christmas Eve, 1914. On a World War I battlefield, a Momentous Event changed the lives of soldiers from France, Germany and England."

Directed by Christian Carion
Starring: Diane Kruger, Benno Furmann and Guillaume Canet

"On Christmas Eve during World War I, the Germans, French, and Scottish fraternize and get to know the men who live on the opposite side of a brutal war, in what became a true lesson of humanity." (IMDB.com)

Watched this for the first time last year and I've decided that it'll be a film that I watch every year around Christmas. The film is based on a true story and it shows some true Christmas Spirit in that people can come together, even in times of war, and find that they're really not that different from one another.

31 Christmas Movie Recommendations... #2: How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966)

Today's recommendation is another short film (26 mins.), but just like Mickey's Christmas Carol, I consider it a Christmas classic. In fact, if you haven't seen this one, see it immediately.

Dr. Suess' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966)
Directed by Chuck Jones and Ben Washam

"A grumpy hermit hatches a plan to steal Christmas from the Whos of Whoville." (IMDB.com)

What makes this a great flick? Well, for one, it's narrated by the horror icon Boris Karloff. Two, Max (the dog) is adorable. Three, it's sweet and has meaning. Four, the story was written by Dr. Suess and Chuck Jones did the animation/directing. You can't get much better than that!
