LGBT Pride Month Movie Recommendation #30: "Imagine Me & You" (2005)

With today being June 30th, today is the last day of LGBT Pride Month. I hope everyone had a fun and safe Pride Month.

For the final entry of my month long LGBT movie recommendations, I saved one of my favorite romantic comedies for last and I think it's a great way to close out LGBT Pride Month.

Imagine Me & You (2005)
Directed by Ol Parker
Starring: Piper Perabo, Lena Headey and Matthew Goode

"Piper Perabo lights up the screen as Rachel, a blushing bride whose perfect nuptials take a surprising turn at the altar. An innocent glance between Rachel and an unexpected wedding guesst is all it takes to spark a love-at-first-sight romance with a surprising twist - the object of Rachel's affection is a smart and sensuous...woman! Their shocking romance causes quite a stir amongst her family and friends as Rachel is forced to choose between her husband and the girl of her dreams."

LGBT Pride Month Movie Recommendation #28: "For the Bible Tells Me So" (2007)

For the Bible Tells Me So (2007)
Directed by Daniel G. Karslake

"The place of gay and lesbian congregation and clergy within various Christian denominations has become an increasingly controversial issue in recent decades, and many conservative Christian leaders have justified church polices which limit the participation of homosexuals in the church (as well as support of legislation against gay marriage or civil rights for gays) by citing certain passages of the Holy Bible. But what do these passages really mean? How accurate is their translation from the original holy texts? And have they been used outside of proper context to justify a political agenda that runs counter to Christian ideals of acceptance and forgiveness? For The Bible Tells Me So is a documentary which looks at the ongoing battle of gays and lesbians to celebrate their faith without denying their sexual preferences. The film includes interviews with a number of conservative Christian families as well as V. Gene Robinson, who became the first officially ordained Anglican bishop; political activist and spiritual leader Bishop Desmond Tutu; and Chrissy Gephardt, the openly lesbian daughter of Congressman Dick Gephardt." Filming Has Begun on the 'Carrie' Remake

Lionsgate has announced through a press release that the remake of the 1976 horror movie Carrie has begun filming in Toronto, Ontario. The press release includes information about the cast, story and crew which you can read below:

"Principal photography has commenced in Toronto, Ontario on the highly anticipated horror film CARRIE, it was announced today by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and Screen Gems. Director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry; Stop-Loss) reimagines Stephen King’s best-selling novel for MGM and Screen Gems’ take on the enduring genre classic. Starring Chloe Grace Moretz (Hugo), four time Oscar-nominee Julianne Moore (Crazy, Stupid, Love; The Kids are Alright) and Judy Greer (The Descendants), CARRIE tells the supernatural tale of a telekinetic teenage girl tormented by her peers. CARRIE is slated for a 2013 theatrical release.

The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Moore) and her daughter Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday, Youth in Revolt), but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde, The Three Musketeers), regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross (newcomer Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film version of CARRIE earned Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

MGM and Screen Gems’ CARRIE is directed by Kimberly Peirce and produced by Kevin Misher (Public Enemies). J. Miles Dale (The Vow) serves as executive producer and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Big Love) wrote the script from King’s original story. CARRIE’s creative team includes Director of Photography Steve Yedlin (Looper), Production Designer Carol Spier (Eastern Promises),Costume Designer Luis Sequeira (The Thing) and Editor Lee Percy (Boys Don’t Cry)."

A release date of March 15, 2013 has been set.

LGBT Pride Month Movie Recommendation #26: "The Birdcage" (1996)

The Birdcage (1996)
Directed by Mike Nichols
Starring: Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest

The great improvisational comedy team of Mike Nichols and Elaine May reunited to (respectively) direct and write this update of the French comedy La Cage Aux Folles. Robin Williams stars as a gay Miami nightclub owner who is forced to play it straight and ask his drag-queen partner (Nathan Lane) to hide out when Williams's son invites his prospective--and highly conservative--in-laws and fiancée to a meet-and-greet dinner party. Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest play the straight-laced senator and his wife, and Calista Flockhart (from television's Ally McBeal) plays their daughter in a culture-clash with outrageous consequences. May's witty screenplay incorporates some pointed observations about the political landscape of the 1990s and takes a sensitive approach to the comedy's underlying drama. Topping off the action is Hank Azaria in a scene-stealing role as Williams's and Lane's flamboyant housekeeper, "Agador Spartacus." (Jeff Shannon)

Movie Recommendation of the Week: "The Muppets" (2011)

My movie recommendation of the week:

The Muppets (2011)
Directed by James Bobin
Starring: Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and Rashida Jones

"With the help of three fans, The Muppets must reunite to save their old theater from a greedy oil tycoon." (IMDB.com)

So much better than I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, I was expecting to enjoy it becuase I grew up with The Muppets, but it surpassed my expectations. Lots of laughs, I actually laughed out loud a few times. Great cameos, Emily Blunt and Neil Patrick Harris just to name a couple.  Kudos to Segel and Nicholas Stoller for writing a wonderful script because they did The Muppets justice.

The Kids Are All Right (2010)
Directed by Lisa Cholodenko
Starring: Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson

"Nic and Jules (three-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening and four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore) are married and share a cozy suburban Southern California home with their teenage children, Joni and Laser (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson). Nic and Jules – or, when referred to jointly by Joni, “Moms” – gave birth to and raised their children, and built a family life for the four of them. As Joni prepares to leave for college, 15-year-old Laser presses her for a big favor. He wants Joni, now 18, to help him find their biological father; the two teenagers were conceived by donor insemination.

Against her better judgment, Joni honors her brother’s request and manages to make contact with “bio-dad” Paul (Mark Ruffalo), an easygoing restaurateur. The kids find themselves drawn to the confirmed bachelor’s footloose style – especially in contrast to Nic, a principled doctor who has long established their house rules. Jules, who has been looking to start a new career in landscaping, also strikes up a rapport with Paul. As Paul comes into the lives of the forthright four, an unexpected new chapter begins for them as family ties are defined, re-defined, and then re-re-defined." (Official Website)

Jim Carrey Exits "Dumb and Dumber" Sequel

Three months ago, Peter Farrelly confirmed that a sequel to the 1994 comedy Dumb and Dumber was in the works and the two stars from the film, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, would reprise their roles. It now looks like that the fate of the sequel is up in the air because Entertainment Tonight is reporting that Jim Carrey has exited the project.

Sources are saying that Carrey grew more and more frustrated with New Line and Warner Brothers because he felt that the two studios didn't show enough enthusiasm towards the project.

Entertainment Tonight contacted Carrey's publicist, who confirmed the story and provided them with a short statement by the actor which said, "I would have thought Dumb and Dumber To was a no-brainer, after all it's implied in the title."

As much as I was looking forward to the sequel since I loved the first one, I think that the project should be scrapped completely since Carrey has dropped out.

'Bachelor' Creator Says Most of Reality Shows are Fake

Mike Fleiss is the creator and executive producer of The Bachelor and according to him, the majority of reality TV shows are fake.

"I think most of the shows are fake," said Fleiss during a talk at the Banff World Media Festival. However, when it comes to his show, it's not fake.

"I think there's all kinds of (bull) going on behind the scenes with, I would say, outside of the talent shows and 'The Bachelor,' where we really kill ourselves and spend a lot of money and time and destroy our staff to make sure it's real, that 70 to 80 percent of the shows on TV are (bull). They’re loosely scripted. Things are planted. Things are salted into the environment so things seem more shocking."

Fleiss went on to say that producers and the networks aren't the only ones at blame, but that the viewers are to blame as well.

"(Viewers are) not requiring a pure delivery of non-fiction content (from the shows). They know it's somewhat fake, but they're OK with it."

Hearing Fleiss say that the majority of reality TV shows out there are fake is some of the least surprising news I've heard. Of course most of reality tv is fake and things are planted. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: "Jersey Shore Shark Attack" (2012)

My movie recommendation of the week:

Jersey Shore Shark Attack (2012)
Directed by John Shepphird
Starring: Jeremy Luc, Melissa Molinaro, Tony Sirico, Jack Scalia, Paul Sorvino, William Atherton and Joey Fatone

"Albino bull sharks are no match for attitude, fist pumps and spray tans."

I'm making SyFy's Jersey Shore Shark Attack my movie recommendation of the week because it's awesomely bad and had me laughing! The acting was actually not as bad as I was expecting and the parody of the characters from Jersey Shore was perfect. The dialog and CGI were bad, but I wasn't surprised because like all SyFy flicks, they're not meant to be taken seriously and that's what I like about them. Anyone who likes the flicks that SyFy puts out there and/or enjoys a good laugh, check out Jersey Shore Shark Attack.

This coming Saturday, June 16th, SyFy will air Piranhaconda and you better believe that I'll be watching.

Grey's Anatomy: My Predictions for the Season 9 Premiere

WARNING: The post will contain spoilers from the season 8 finale, so if you haven't seen it yet, you may not want to continue reading!

While filming hasn't begun on season 9 of Grey's Anatomy, the show's creator Shonda Rhimes tweeted that writing for the upcoming season has started.

"Sitting in the PP writers room today! Was at GA yesterday and will be at Scandal tomorrow! Loving seasons 9, 6 and 2!"

So, the big question is, what will happen to the survivors (Yang, Grey, Shepherd, Robbins and Sloan) of the plane crash during the season 8 finale?

A sixth person, Lexie Grey, was on the plane, but she didn't survive and died about 20 minutes in the finale. While fans knew that someone was going to die, unless they didn't read anything about the show leading up to the finale, they were upset and angry which wasn't surprising since Lexie was a fan favorite. Two weeks after the finale episode aired, the actress who played Lexie, Chyler Leigh, released a statement about her departure from the show where she said it was her decision to leave.

"Earlier this year, I made the decision that Season eight would be my last on "Grey’s Anatomy." I met with Shonda and we worked together to give Lexie’s story appropriate closure. I am very lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for five seasons. My experience on "Grey’s Anatomy" is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I want to take this time to say thank you to the fans. Your unconditional love and support have made these last five years very special for me. I look forward to my next chapter and I hope you will continue to follow me on my journey."

I think and hope that her statement helped some fans know that she made the decision to leave, but I know from what I've read on Twitter is that while they are okay with Leigh leaving the show, the problem they have is how Rhimes decided to kill off the character instead of just having her leave. I get that, but Rhimes made the decision for a reason and nothing can be done about it. It's just how it is.

On May 18th, Rhimes did an interview with E! From her interview, I'm going to give my predictions on what's going to happen in the season 9 premiere which I assume will air sometime in September. She didn't much away in the interview, but what she did give away wasn't good news.

A question she was asked was, "What kind of reaction have you seen today about the finale, and is it what you were expecting?" She answered the question, but the last thing she said which was, "Everyone is still so immersed in ‘Who died?' and no one is talking about the thing that I actually think is important and was the point of the episode." That prompted the interviewer to ask, "Which is?" and Rhimes' answer to that question shows that despite surviving the actual plane crash, the five who remain out there in the woods aren't safe.

"Which is they are still out there. They're still out there in the forest, and we don't know if they are going to be OK. We left it open for a reason because…I hate to say this, but just because you saw people alive at the end of the finale doesn't mean they're going to be alive when the season starts up. We are completely jumping off into the unknown next season."

I get what Rhimes is saying, but I have a feeling that if anyone dies, it won't be Shepherd, Grey or Yang. Why? The three actors (Patrick Dempsey, Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh) who portray those characters have signed on for two more seasons. They're not going anywhere and the same can be said for Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), Justin Chambers (Alex Karev) and James Pickens, Jr. (Richard Webber) because they also signed contracts. So, by process of elimination, if anyone from the crash dies, it will either be Arizona Robbins or Mark Sloan. Both characters, played by Jessica Capshaw and Eric Dane, were in bad shape, so at this point, it's not looking good for either one of them.

In regards to Arizona, we last saw her with a bad leg injury (the bone was exposed) and coughing up blood. In the episode before that, she tells Callie to never leave her, so that has me thinking that it's possible that in the season 9 premiere Arizona will be the one to leave Callie by dying from her injuries. Then, in the finale, Callie kept talking about how wonderful her life was with Arizona and the baby. It's definitely not looking good for her. I hope I'm wrong, though!

With Mark, he had a gash on his chest and needed surgery to empty a pool of blood that was building up in his heart. Cristina and Meredith save his life, but his survival isn't guaranteed because at one point, he told Arizona to take care of their baby because Lexie was waiting for him. Arizona kept talking to him and told him to fight because Callie and their baby Sophia were waiting for both of them to come home.

However, what if a death in the season premiere happens to someone in Seattle and not any of the crash victims? There was lots of talk about the possibility of April Kepner, played by Sarah Drew, committing suicide. People came to that conclusion because she failed the boards and then had issues about not being a good Christian for losing her virginity before marriage. Is it possible that she somehow dies in season 9? I guess it's possible, but it's a far-fetched possibility.

Ok...let's get into my predictions for the season 9 premiere.

1) As much as I would hate for this to happen, I think that if anyone from the crash dies, it'll be Arizona.
2) Derek and Meredith stay in Seattle, but Derek won't be able to perform surgeries for a while due to his injury.
3) Cristina stays in Seattle and will work things out with Owen over the course of the season.
4) Whether Arizona lives or dies, Karev stays saying that he owes it to Arizona because it should've been him on the plane.
5) Mark lives.

My one hope for the premiere: no one dies!

Well, those are my early season 9 premiere predictions. I'm going to keep an eye out for contract news concerning the actors, especially when it comes to Capshaw and Dane because that would definitely help with trying to figure out what's going to happen to their characters.

LGBT Pride Month Movie Recommendation #3 and #4: "But I'm a Cheerleader" (1999) and "Adam & Steve" (2005)

But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)
Directed by Jamie Babbit
Starring: Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, RuPaul and Cathy Moriarty

"Megan is an all-American girl. She's a cheerleader, she has a boyfriend, etc. But she doesn't like kissing her boyfriend very much. And she's pretty touchy with her cheerleader friends. And she only has pictures of girls up in her locker. Her parents and friends conclude that she *must* be gay and send her off to "sexual redirection" school, full of admittedly homosexual misfits, where she can learn to how to be straight."

Adam & Steve (2005)
Directed by Craig Chester
Starring: Craig Chester, Malcolm Gets, Parker Posey and Chris Kattan

"In the 1980s, Adam and Steve had a horrifically embarrassing one-night stand. When they meet again years later, they fail to recognize each other, and fall in love - as do their wisecracking best friends."

Movie Recommendation of the Week: "Saturday Night Fever" (1977)

My movie recommendation of the week:

Saturday Night Fever (1977)
Directed by John Badham
Starring: John Travolta, Karen Lynn Gorney, Barry Miller, Paul Pape, Joseph Cali and Donna Pescow

"Travolta plays Tony Manero, a Brooklyn paint-store clerk who'd give anything to break out of his dead-end existence. In life, Tony is a peasant; on the disco dance floor, he's a king. As the soundtrack plays one Bee Gees hit after another (including "Stayin' Alive"), we watch white-suited Tony strut his stuff amidst flashing lights and sweaty, undulating bodies. Tony's class aspirations are mirrored in his relationship with his dance partner, Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney), a secretary eager to move into the glamorous world of Manhattan."

Travolta is a great actor and after watching this film, I can see why he was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Tony Manero. He was fantastic. Of course, the dancing and soundtrack have to be mentioned because both are awesome! Don't go into it expecting a happy disco dancing film because it actually has some depressing and dark scenes, but other than that, great film.

I noticed that the sequel, Staying Alive (1983), is available on Instant Netflix. I know I'll end up watching it, but I'm a little hesitant because of some reviews I read, but it's always good to see something despite the bad reviews and have your own opinion on a film.

LGBT Pride Month Movie Recommendation #2: "Milk" (2008)

Milk (2008)
Directed by Gus Van Sant
Starring: Sean Penn, Alison Pill, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, Diego Luna and James Franco

"The story of Harvey Milk, and his struggles as an American gay activist who fought for gay rights and became California's first openly gay elected official."

Penn was the perfect choice to play Milk and he deserved the Oscar that he won for his performance. The rest of the cast was excellent as well. A powerful and moving film.

In recommending this film, I also have to recommend The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) which is an excellent documentary narrated by Harvey Fierstein.

LGBT Pride Month Movie Recommendation #1: "Show Me Love" (1998)

It was tougher than expected when it came to which LGBT film to recommend first. Do I start with a comedy or drama? Well known or less known? I ultimately decided to choose one of my favorites that after renting it from Netflix, I had to own it and ordered it online. On that note, let's get to the recommendation...

Show Me Love (Fucking Åmål) (1998)
Directed by Lukas Moodysson
Starring: Alexandra Dahlström, Rebecka Liljeberg, Erica Carlson and Mathias Rust

"Show Me Love" is the comic and heartbreaking story of Agnes, Elin and their teenage friends growing up in the small town of Åmål. Nothing ever happens until Elin shows up at Agnes' birthday party and Elin's life takes an unexpected turn. Stuck in the middle of two love interests, Elin tries to come to terms with her real self - and the courage it takes to be different.

A wonderful coming of age tale that I found to be honest and real about teenage/high school life. In fact, I found some parts difficult to watch because of how real I found it to be. However, it does have its sweet moments and the ending should bring a smile to your face.

It is a Swedish film, so there are subtitles, but please don't let that stop you from checking it out.
