Movie Recommendation of the Week: "A Lonely Place to Die" (2011)

My movie recommendation of the week:

A Lonely Place to Die (2011)
Directed by Julian Gilbey
Starring: Melissa George, Ed Speleers and Eamonn Walker

While hiking and climbing in the Scottish Highlands, five friends discover a young girl buried underground. They work to get the girl to safety, but soon realize that the kidnappers are pursuing them.

This British thriller moves at a good pace and has plenty of suspense as well as some beautiful scenes showcasing the Scottish Highlands. I did have some issues with the movie such as a few plot holes (don't want to get specific because I could spoil the movie), but the issues I did have didn't keep me from enjoying it the movie and I'm thinking about adding it to my Blu-Ray collection.

Julianne Moore Offered Role in "Carrie"

Deadline is reporting that MGM has officially offered Julianne Moore a role in Kimberly Peirce's remake of the 1976 horror film Carrie.

If Moore accepts the role and I think she will, she'll play Margaret White, Carrie's "nightmarish religious fanatic mother." In the original, the role was played by Piper Laurie which landed her an Oscar nomination.

Chloe Moretz is signed on to play Carrie. It should be noted that Sissy Spacek earned an Oscar nomination for her role as Carrie in the original.

Peirce is directing with Kevin Misher serving as a producer. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the script which is more faithful to the 1974 Stephen King novel than the original.

Mel Gibson to Join "Machete Kills"

It's being reported by Deadline that Mel Gibson is in "serious discussions" to join Machete Kills in a supporting role.

The news of Gibson joining Machete Kills should be no surprise to some as Robert Rodriguez mentioned earlier this month that he was hoping to get Gibson to join the film. He also expressed interest in getting Michelle Williams to join, but so far, no word on how that is going.

The sequel to Machete (2010) will be about Machete (Danny Trejo) being "drafted by the US government to track an arms dealer through Mexico before he can launch a rocket.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: "Foxy Brown" (1974)

My movie recommendation of the week:

Foxy Brown (1974)
Directed by Jack Hill
Starring: Pam Grier, Antonio Fargas, Peter Brown and Kathryn Loder

Foxy Brown (Pam Grier) seeks revenge against some mobsters who murdered her government agent boyfriend after her own brother ratted him out. In order to get close to the drug ring, she joins a prostitution agency disguised as a modeling agency.

Jack Hill does it again with another great film from the Blaxploitation genre while Pam Grier proves, once again, that she's a bad-ass. Blaxploitation films aren't for everyone seeing as they're over the top with some hilarious dialogue, but hey, that's why I enjoy them.

I'd also recommend Coffy (1973) since it starred Grier and was written/directed by Hill.

New Call of Duty to be Revealed During the 2012 NBA Playoffs

Call of Duty fans, mark your calendars because on May 1st, 2012, Activision will reveal the first official details for the next Call of Duty video game during the TNT's coverage of the 2012 NBA playoffs.

The rumor is that it'll be called Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and seeing how successful the first one was, I wouldn't be surprised if the rumor turn out to be true.

Evidence has surfaced that fueled the rumor about Black Ops 2 happening. On April 18th, a poster appeared online that featured the logos for Activision and Treyarch and had the words "Return for Debriefing" below the date of 05-02-12.

If you go to the official website for Call of Duty, there is a window that mentions a world reveal on May 1st which will probably play a teaser trailer on that date after it airs during the playoffs first.

Whether the rumor is true or not, the next Call of Duty will hit stores sometime in November.

My Top 5 Favorite James Franco Films

Today is James Franco's 34th birthday and in honor of his birthday, I'm going to list my top 5 favorite films featuring the actor/writer/director/etc.

1. 127 Hours (2010)

In this true story, Franco plays Aron Ralston who becomes trapped in a canyon in Utah after a boulder falls and pins his arm.

My favorite film featuring Franco and his acting in it was outstanding.

2. Pineapple Express (2008)

In Pineapple Express, Franco plays Saul Silver, a pot dealer. He teams up with Dale Denton (Seth Rogan) after witnesses a murder and they're now being targeted.

My favorite comedy starring Franco. It's downright hilarious.

3. Milk (2008)

In this drama, Franco play Scott Smith, the boyfriend of Harvey Milk.

This film is the story of Harvey Milk and his fight for gay rights and his fight to be California's first openly gay elected official. Franco's supporting role in Milk was excellent.

4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

Franco plays Will Rodman, a scientist who takes Caesar (a chimp) home to raise after his mother is killed after going on a rampage. The thing is, she was given an experimental drug which gave her human like levels of intelligence and it ended up being passed down to Caesar which he uses to start a revolution between apes and humans.

While Caesar (Andy Serkis) is the star of the movie, Franco plays his role very well and it was just a great movie from beginning to end.

5. Spider-Man Trilogy (2002, 2004 and 2007)

Franco plays Harry Osborn, friend of Peter Parker (Tobey MaGuire). He vows revenge when he believes that Spider-Man, Parker, killed his father Norman Osborn (Green Goblin).

I enjoyed all three films, but the third was definitely the weakest and could've been so much better.

Jaime King Joins "Silent Night"

It's been announced that Jaime King (Sin City and My Bloody Valentine) will join Silent Night (remake of 1984s Silent Night, Deadly Night) alongside Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange and The Artist).

Miller (The Aggression Scale) and produced by The Genre Company and Buffalo Gal Pictures. Media House Capital will co-finance production, set to begin next week in Winnipeg. The project was recently announced by Anchor Bay Films and Inferno Entertainment’s new Ember label.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: "The Cabin in the Woods" (2012)

My movie recommendation of the week:

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Directed by Drew Goddard
Starring: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Fran Kranz, Anna Hutchison, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Brian White and Amy Acker

Synopsis from the film's Official Website: Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen.

If you think you know this story, think again. From fan favorites Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard comes The Cabin in the Woods, a mind blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out.

I don't want to say too much because I run the risk of posting spoilers because I feel that this is a film that one has to go into knowing as little as possible about it. I stayed away from clips that were posted online and only watched the trailer. I will say that I loved it. It was fresh with good scares, good gore, great tongue in cheek humor and the last 30 minutes or so were insane in an awesome way. See it!

Trailer for "Zombie Ass: The Toilet of the Dead"

No, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you...there really is a movie coming out called Zombie Ass: The Toilet of the Dead and you can watch the trailer at the bottom of this post.

This Japanese zombie flick was written and directed by Noboru Iguchi. He's the man who brought us films like RoboGeisha and The Machine Girl. If you have seen either of them, then you pretty much know what to expect with Zombie Ass: The Toilet of the Dead. If you haven't seen them, I highly recommend that you check out the trailers first, so you have an idea of what you'll be getting yourself into if you choose to move forward and watch the movies. If you don't like what you see from the trailers, chances are you won't like the film. I do know that I'll be checking this movie out when it's available in the US.

Happy Friday the 13th!

To everyone out there, Happy Friday the 13th!

As always, to celebrate, I will watch one of the movies from the Friday the 13th franchise. I think I'll go for Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood simply because it's been a while since I've seen it. Before that, I'm thinking about watching The Cabin in the Woods today on it's opening day.

To end this post, I'll leave you with a video of one of my favorite Jason kills. In fact, it's from The New Blood. Any guesses at what it could be? Check it out below to see if you guessed correctly.

Again, Happy Friday the 13th!

"Suspiria" Remake Gets a Director, Production Set to Begin in September

Deadline is reporting that a director has been found for the remake of Dario Argento's 1977 Italian-horror flick Suspiria. David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express and Your Highness) is set to direct the script that he co-wrote with Chris Gebert.

Crime Scene Pictures is backing the remake and they've released a statement that says, "We love the style and energy of the original film – and David’s script brilliantly updates the world, presenting a rare opportunity to create an elegant, classic horror film."

With a director on board, the search is now on for an actress to play Suzy (played by Jessica Harper in the original film). She is an American ballet student who is new to a ballet academy in Germany and while there, she learns that a coven of witches actually run the academy.

Production is set to begin in September.

If you haven't seen the original, I highly recommend that you do. You can check out the trailer for it below:

Movie Recommendation of the Week: "American Reunion" (2012)

My movie recommendation of the week:

American Reunion (2012)
Directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg
Starring: Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Tara Reid and Eugene Levy

From the Official Website for American Reunion: "In the comedy American Reunion, all the American Pie characters we met a little more than a decade ago are returning to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. In one long over-due weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn't and that time and distance can't break the bonds of friendship.

It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed, Jim and Michelle married while Kevin and Vicky said goodbye. Oz and Heather grew apart, but Finch still longs for Stifler's mom. Now these lifelong friend have come home as adults to reminisce about - and get inspired by - the hormonal teens who launched a comedy legend."

As a fan of the first three films of the American Pie franchise (forget about those direct to DVD sequels), I was happy to hear that a fourth movie was going to be made. It got even better when it was announced that Universal was able to get all of the original cast members from the first one to sign on for one last slice of pie. American Reunion was downright hilarious and I think others would feel the same way if they, like me, loved the first three, love raunchy humor and enjoy a touch of heart. I'm already looking forward to when it's released on Blu-Ray because I will be adding it to my collection.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: "DeadHeads" (2011)

My movie recommendation of the week:

DeadHeads (2011)
Directed by Brett & Drew T. Pierce
Starring: Michael McKiddy, Ross Kidder, Markus Taylor, Thomas Galasso and Benjamin Webster

Synopsis via the movie's Facebook page: "Two inexplicably coherent zombies awake amidst a zombie attack and decide to take a road trip to find the one's lost love, unaware they are being chased by the agents of a ruthless company with it's own agenda."

I've been wanting to see DeadHeads since I first heard about it quite a while ago and I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed when I ordered my copy from Amazon. This flick is a zombie comedy or "zombedy" with heart that delivers the perfect amount of comedy, gore and romance. The acting great, especially Michael McKiddy, Ross Kidder, Markus Taylor and Benjamin Webster. Despite being an independent movie and not having millions of dollars to spend, the effects and make up were better than expected. The Pierce brothers hit a home run with DeadHeads and I can't wait to see what they do next.

"Summer School" Remake is Coming

Adam Sandler and his production company, Happy Madison, are planning a remake of the 1987 comedy Summer School. So far, no actor is attached to star in the movie.

The original was about a high school teacher who has plans for a Hawaiian summer vacation, but his plans are suddenly changed when he gets roped into teaching an English summer school class. It starred Mark Harmon, Kirstie Alley and Courtney Thorne-Smith.

The trailer for the original is below. Check it out:

"Dumb and Dumber 2" to Begin Production in September!

It's being reported over at ComingSoon.net that at a press junket for The Three Stooges, Peter Farrelly said that production on the sequel to Dumb and Dumber will begin in September. He even says that the two stars from the original, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, will return to reprise their roles as Lloyd and Harry.

"We're getting set to shoot 'Dumb and Dumber 2' in September," he says. "It's the first sequel we've ever done and we've got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back."

Farrelly goes on to say that a sequel is something they've always wanted to do and while Daniels was all for it, Carrey was too busy. However, that all changed with a phone call from Carrey.

"...So we've always wanted to do a sequel and finally Jim called up. Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it. Jim was busy, but he called and said, 'We've got to do this thing again.' He had just watched 'Dumb and Dumber' and he said, 'This is the perfect sequel. Let's do it.'"

I really hope this isn't an April Fool's joke because I would love to see a sequel, especially with Carrey and Daniels on board.

"Leprechaun" Reboot Gets Their Leprechaun

Not too long ago, Lionsgate announced that they were teaming up with WWE Studios to reboot 1993's Leprechaun. The two studios are aiming for a March 2013 release date for the film titled Leprechaun: Origins. We also now know who will be playing Leprechaun and it's not Warwick Davis, who starred in the original and the sequels that followed. The title role has been given to Dylan Postl, the WWE star who is better known as Hornswoggle.

Postl went to Twitter to make the announcement.

"The #swogglesecret that I've been hinting at all week is that in March 2013 I will be starring in Leprechaun:Origins by WWE Studios!!!"

WWE Studios released their official statement.

"As first reported by Variety, WWE Studios is joining forces with Lionsgate for a two-film slate, the first of which will be a reboot of the hit “Leprechaun” franchise. “Leprechaun: Origins” will star WWE’s own mischievous Superstar Hornswoggle making his feature film debut, proving the old adage that there truly are no small parts, only small actors. A writer or director has yet to be announced."
