Sequel to "Bridesmaids" Could Happen...Without Kristen Wiig

Universal is thinking about doing a sequel to Bridesmaids, but it would be done without star and co-writer Kristen Wiig.

The Hollywood Reporter talked to Wiig about whether she and her co-writer, Annie Mumolo, are working on a sequel.

"We aren't working on that. Annie and I aren't planning a sequel. We are writing something else."

Why isn't she and her writing partner working on a sequel to the box office hit? The word is that Wiig and her co-stars (Maya Rudolph, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne) weren't too happy with a bonus of only $100,000 which they and others felt was pretty low considering how much the film made. Wiig declined to comment when asked if she was disappointed with the bonus.

With Wiig out, Universal isn't giving up hope for a sequel according to a rep for the studio.

"We are over the moon with the success of Bridesmaids, and if we do a sequel we want to get it right. We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts, and if the right one emerges, we'll move forward."

On a budget of $32 million, the film grossed $288 worldwide. The film has received award nominations including the Golden Globes where it's been nominated for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical.

As much as I loved Bridesmaids, I really don't think a sequel is necessary. Would I watch it if it did happen? Sure, but without Wiig and Mumolo on board as writers, I won't be expecting anything close to the original.

After seeing the trailer and the actresses/actors that are involved in this movie, I'm sold and will be checking it out when it's released because, to me, it looks hilarious. It should also be mentioned that this is Wiig's first starring role (it'll be interesting to see if she can carry a film and I think she will do just fine) and she co-wrote it with Annie Mumolo.
