Movie of the Week: 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' (2012)

Wow...I completely forgot to post my "movie of the week" on Monday. I don't know how that happened, but it's better late than never, right?

My movie recommendation of the week:

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)

Directed by Benh Zeitlin
Starring: Quvenzhane Wallis and Dwight Henry

"Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in the Bathtub, a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink's tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he's no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack, temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink's health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother." (Sundance Film Festival via IMDB.com)

For her portrayal of Hushpuppy, Quvenzhane Wallis became the youngest person ever at age 9 to receive a Best Actress Oscar nomination and after watching the film, I feel that she deserved her nomination. Beautifully shot, wonderful acting and a great story makes this a near perfect film. I saw it several days ago and I'm still thinking about it today. I feel that this is a film that people should watch which is why it's my movie of the week!
