Movie of the Week: '5 Broken Cameras' (2012)

My movie recommendation of the week:

5 Broken Cameras (2012)
Directed by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi

"When his fourth son, Gibreel, is born, Emad, a Palestinian villager, gets his first camera. In his village, Bil'in, a separation barrier is being built and the villagers start to resist this decision. For more than five years, Emad films the struggle, which is lead by two of his best friends, alongside filming how Gibreel grows. Very soon it affects his family and his own life. Daily arrests and night raids scare his family; his friends, brothers and him as well are either shot or arrested. One Camera after another is shot at or smashed, each camera tells a part of his story." (Guy Davidi via IMDB.com)

Movie of the Week: 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' (2012)

Wow...I completely forgot to post my "movie of the week" on Monday. I don't know how that happened, but it's better late than never, right?

My movie recommendation of the week:

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)

Directed by Benh Zeitlin
Starring: Quvenzhane Wallis and Dwight Henry

"Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in the Bathtub, a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink's tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he's no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack, temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink's health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother." (Sundance Film Festival via IMDB.com)

For her portrayal of Hushpuppy, Quvenzhane Wallis became the youngest person ever at age 9 to receive a Best Actress Oscar nomination and after watching the film, I feel that she deserved her nomination. Beautifully shot, wonderful acting and a great story makes this a near perfect film. I saw it several days ago and I'm still thinking about it today. I feel that this is a film that people should watch which is why it's my movie of the week!

'Hot Tub Time Machine' Sequel Could Happen!

It's being reported that MGM Studios is in "exploratory talks" with some of the cast from 2010's Hot Tub Time Machine about reprising their roles for a sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, involved in the talks with the studio are Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke. Currently, John Cusack and Lizzie Caplan are not involved in any talks that are going on.

Do I hope the talks are successful? You bet I do! Hopefully, Cusack gets involved and agrees to be a part of it if it does move forward.

Movie of the Week: The Invisible War (2012)

Movie of the Week:

The Invisible War (2012)
Directed by Kirby Dick

"An investigative documentary about the epidemic of rape of soldiers within the US military." (IMDB.com)

Words I would use to describe The Invisible War: powerful, eye opening, heartbreaking, infuriating...

This documentary was nominated for an Academy Award this year and after watching it, I feel that it deserved that nomination because it was all the things that I listed above. I can't predict if it'll win an Oscar until I see the other nominated documentaries which I hope to do before the winners are announced.

Movie of the Week: Kiss Me (2011)

It's been a few months since my last "movie of the week" post, so I'm going to start it up again. If anyone has forgotten how it works, I recommend a movie on Monday from the movies I watched the previous week. For example, today is January 7th, so that means that my recommendation will come from the week of December 31st, 2012 to January 6th, 2013.

So, let's get on with this week's movie recommendation...

Kiss Me (2011)

Directed by Alexandra-Therese Keining
Starring: Ruth Vega Fernandez, Liv Mjönes and Joakim Nätterqvist

*Note: For some reason, I can't post any pictures, so for right now, no poster will be added. It's something I will work on, though.

"MIA (Ruth Vega Fernandez) and FRIDA (Liv Mjönes), both in their thirties, meet each other for the first time at their parents' engagement party. Mia's father, Lasse (Krister Henriksson), is about to get married to Frida's mother, Elizabeth (Lena Endre), which will make Mia and Frida stepsisters. Lasse's daughter, Mia, has not visited her father in years and arrives with her boyfriend, Tim (Joakim Nätterqvist), with whom she is about to get married. As Mia and Frida get to know one another, strong emotions begin to stir between them. Their relationship will turn everything upside down for everyone close to them with dramatic consequences." (IMDB.com)

I absolutely loved this film! While the film was predictable (I knew how it was going to end before hit the play button), I found it to be sweet, well written with great acting. It definitely brought the romantic side of me out, but since I'm currently single, I will have to wait until another time to put the romance to use. Anyways, I'm buying this DVD because I know I'll want to watch it again.

It does need to be said that it's a Swedish film, so it does have subtitles, but please don't let that deter you from checking it out.
