I'm serious...this is the last warning because you will be spoiled if you continue reading.
I'll get into what Rhimes said in an interview in just a bit, but first, let's go back to the season 8 finale. We last saw Arizona trying to keep Mark, who was in bad shape, awake by telling him that Callie and Sofia were waiting for them back home. Arizona wasn't in the best of shape either because she ended up with a really bad leg wound (you could see the bone) and coughing up blood which would indicate internal bleeding. The episode ended with them (Arizona, Mark, Cristina, Meredith and Derek) still in the woods and Lexie dead from her injuries.
Ok...let's get to what this post is actually about and that is the fate of Arizona Robbins. Why am I focusing on her and not the others? Well, in an interview with the The Hollywood Reporter, Rhimes said that she could confirm that Derek, Meredith and Cristina survive. Before that interview, it was announced that Eric Dane (Mark) is leaving the show. It's not known if the character will leave Seattle or die, but I'm going to guess that he dies from his injuries. In the same interview with THR, Rhimes talks about Dane's exit:
"I'm really proud of the way we're handing his exit. I really wanted and fought for that character to be given their due. I didn't want to come back to this season and say, "Mark Sloane is gone." I really wanted to give that character his due and we came up with a beautiful and creative way to showcase that and that goodbye."
However, the one character she didn't want to talk about much was Arizona. From the same interview, she was asked "Which leaves Arizona, who wasn't in great shape in the season finale. What's her heath status like when the season picks up?" Rhimes' response:
"I don't know that I want to talk about Arizona."
The interviewer asked another question concerning Arizona about how her fate will impact Callie. Her response to that question:
"It's going to impact her hugely. We're going to spend a lot of time with Callie this season, there's a lot of story to be told there."
Just from those two answers, I thought for sure that Arizona wasn't going to survive and I know I wasn't the only one. I mean, can you just imagine what that would be like for Callie? Mark is leaving and if Arizona leaves too, that would leave Callie heartbroken with a daughter to raise by herself. Surely, Rhimes wouldn't do that to Callie, right? Right?!
Even Jessica Capshaw wasn't giving away anything when she tweeted (thanks to Grey's Gabble for capturing the tweet!) "Dear Grey's fans...Stop trying to trick me into telling you if I am going back to work soon ;) I'm not spilling the beans... xx Jessica" back on July 14th. She still hasn't said anything about working on GA, so she's good keeping all of us guessing!
However, things are looking a bit better for Arizona because there are rumors circulating that while she will survive, she will end up losing part of her leg that was injured in the plane crash.
If I remember right, what started these rumors was a call sheet for season 9. Jessica Capshaw is on the sheet and on bottom right hand corner of the sheet, "AZ's L leg" can be seen listed under props. You can see the call sheet HERE thanks to Grey's Gabble.
Grey's Gabble also posted a Facebook posting which shows a casting company looking for a white female Amputee "with her left leg missing mid thigh." If you put two and two together, one can assume that Arizona will survive, but will have to lose part of her left leg.
There is a third piece of evidence that could prove the rumor to be true. Over at TVLine.com, Michael Ausiello hints at Arizona losing her leg.
Question: Please, I’m dying for some Grey’s Anatomy scoop, anything will be good. Thank you. — Mateo
Ausiello: I’m hearing some really cryptic rumors about the fate of a beloved character that makes me think this title has less to do with death and more to do with… something else.
For anyone wondering about the title of the first episode of season 9, it is Going Going Gone. Could Ausiello believe that the title is hinting that Arizona's leg will be gone? It's sure looking that way, but we'll know for sure when season 9 begins on September 27th.
I do know one thing, if Arizona survives, but in the process loses her leg, it won't be an easy road for her or Callie and it'll be an interesting storyline, that's for sure. However, Rhimes did say she was calling this season the Season of Romance, so hopefully Callie and Arizona (if she survives!) gets to experience some of that romance. Bring on season 9!
