Grey's Anatomy: My Thoughts on 'Going, Going, Gone' (S9, Ep 1)

Spoiler Warning: If you didn't watch last night's episode, you may not want to read on or else you will be spoiled and you'll have no one to blame but yourself!

Last night was the season 9 premiere of Grey's Anatomy titled Going, Going, Gone. The episode did not pick up where the season 8 finale ended (that episode is next week), but instead, jumped ahead some time so we get to see what the doctors are up to since the plane crash. For some, they're on the job working while others...weren't so lucky. This post will be about the ones who weren't so lucky.

The unlucky ones include Dr. Mark Sloan and Dr. Arizona Robbins.

Mark Sloan: Sloan has been unresponsive for 30 days, so at 5pm, he'll be taken off life support per his wishes. Throughout the episode, we see some Mark flashbacks and I took it as a sign that he wasn't going to pull through and I was right because at the end of the episode, Derek and Callie sit beside Mark as Dr. Webber turns off the machines that were keeping Mark alive. They stay with him until the very end and I'll admit that there were tears on my part.

I knew that Eric Dane was going to leave the show and while I knew they had the option of killing off the character, I guess I didn't want to believe they would do that and instead, just have him take a job somewhere else.

R.I.P. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan!

Arizona Robbins: We (the viewers) didn't get to know the fate of her until the very end of the episode when Callie walked into the bedroom and told her to "get up" and "snap out of it" because Mark is now gone and she needs her to help with their child. Arizona turns over and is obviously angry and upset. She throws off the blanket and we know why...her left leg has been amputated mid-thigh and she asks Callie how is she supposed to snap out it after she (Callie) cut off her leg? Cut to Callie who is, naturally, upset as well and she walks out with the door slamming behind her.

This season is going to be interesting to watch when it comes to Callie and Arizona. Arizona has to come to terms about losing her leg and the fact that Callie was the one to do the amputation and Callie has to deal with the fact that while she amputated her wife's leg in order to save her, Arizona is going to resent her for some time. Not only that, but Callie also has to deal with losing her best friend and father of her child. With all she has to deal with, there is no question as to why this season will feature lots of Callie...and I'm totally fine with that.

While I'm sure there will be lots tension between the two, I see them staying together (Callie did promise Arizona that she would never leave her in season 8) and I think their relationship will be even stronger by the end of the season because they are meant for each other. I just hope we won't have to wait that long to see it happen because, according to the show's creator Shonda Rhimes, this season is the "season of romance" and Calzona has to be a part of that romance!

Next week's episode, Remember the Time, will show what happened after the plane crash. Check out the preview below!

Edited to add: I really don't think Callie actually cut off Arizona's leg. As far as I know, a doctor can't work on spouses/relatives/etc. However, I do think that Callie gives the ok for the amputation despite her telling Arizona she wouldn't let it happen. I don't blame her if that's the case because if I was in the same situation and the person I loved needed it to be done in order to save their life, I'd give the ok too.

TRAILER: 'Texas Chainsaw 3D'

Release date: January 4th, 2013

Official synopsis via Collider.com:

"Lionsgate’s TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family–or so they thought. Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…"

Spoilers and Speculation: More on the Fate of Arizona Robbins

WARNING: Just like my previous post, this post will also contain spoilers, so if you don't want to be spoiled about upcoming things in season 9 of Grey's Anatomy, do not read on!

Yesterday, Michael Ausiello (TVLine) answered some questions about several television shows and a few questions were about Grey's Anatomy. Two questions involved Arizona and Callie (Calzona) in one way or another.

Question: I’m very excited by the prospect of a Derek-Callie friendship this season on Grey’s Anatomy. What exactly brings them together? —Eric
Ausiello: The "shared experience" of the crash, per Rhimes, who notes, "Even though Callie wasn’t in the crash herself, they both experienced some pretty traumatic things because of it. Also, Callie is going to be working in a pretty interesting way to fix Derek’s hand."

Question: What’s with the lockdown on Grey’s Anatomy spoilers pertaining to Arizona? Is Shonda Rhimes attempting to build suspense by staying mum? —Dorcas
Ausiello: As Rhimes explained it to me, she would prefer the audience go on the character’s "really interesting journey" with fresh eyes "as opposed to already knowing what’s going to happen. It’s one of the journeys that I’m most proud of. The acting has been incredible. We just want to let it be what it is."

The second question is the one that really grabbed my interest because Shonda Rhimes actually talked a little about Arizona despite saying in a different interview that she didn't really know if she wanted to talk about her. However, while it seems that she's willing to talk, she really doesn't want to get into specifics because, like she said, she wants viewers to experience Arizona's journey without knowing much. Thinking about it that way, it makes total sense and it will have a huge impact on viewers with seeing how Arizona and even Callie deal with the situation, whatever it may be. Obviously, it won't be an easy road for either of them, but I think in the end, their relationship will be even stronger and I'm hoping they'll get to experience some romance because Rhimes did describe season 9 as the "season of romance".

With Rhimes basically confirming that Arizona survives, I'm thinking that the rumor about her losing her left leg is true, but I could still be wrong even though I don't think I am! ;) Oh yeah, there is another piece of evidence that shows that Arizona is alive and well in the upcoming season. Grey's Gabble posted a pic that Kevin McKidd (Dr. Owen Hunt) posted to his Twitter account and you can see it HERE.

I think that the upcoming storyline for Arizona, whatever it may be, will definitely be interesting and like Rhimes said, the acting should be amazing by everyone involved.

Don't forget, season 9 premieres on September 27th!

Movie Recommendation of the Week: "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" (2011)

My Movie Recommendation of the Week:

Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory
Directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky

"PARADISE LOST 3: PURGATORY, the new installment of Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky’s series about the notorious 1993 “West Memphis Three” child murders, chronicles the 18-year fight to prove the innocence of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley.

On May 5, 1993, the bodies of three eight-year-old boys were found next to a muddy creek in the wooded Robin Hood Hills area of West Memphis, Arkansas. A month later, three teenagers, Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelley, were arrested, accused and convicted of brutally raping, mutilating and killing the boys. Following trials fraught with innuendoes of satanic worship, emotionally charged statements and allegations of coerced confessions, the defendants were convicted, despite a lack of physical evidence linking them to the crime. The HBO films PARADISE LOST: THE CHILD MURDERS AT ROBIN HOOD HILLS (1996) and PARADISE LOST 2: REVELATIONS (2000) sparked a national discussion about the innocence or guilt of the West Memphis 3.

PARADISE LOST 3: PURGATORY, produced by Radical Media resumes the examination of a horrifying crime and it’s aftershocks with Echols still on death row and Baldwin and Misskelley still serving life sentences, and follows the story all the way to it’s stunning conclusion. For nearly two decades, Berlinger and Sinofsky have followed this story with extraordinary access to all of the players on both sides of this tragedy...

PARADISE LOST 3: PURGATORY reveals recent DNA and other forensic evidence (unavailable at the time of the murders), as well as other troubling developments, including allegations of juror misconduct, that suggest the trio did not receive a fair trial. The film includes new interviews with Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley, who are now in their 30s, and many of the subjects of the first two documentaries, including John Mark Byers and Terry Hobbs, stepfathers of two of the victims and frequent targets of the media (and each other)." If anyone hasn't seen the first two documentaries, I highly recommend that you watch them first before watching this one. Trust me, it's well worth it.

Spoliers and Speculation: The Fate of Arizona Robbins

WARNING: Before I begin, I want to make this very clear...this post will contain spoilers and speculation about several characters, so do not continue reading if you don't want to be spoiled in any way!!!

I'm serious...this is the last warning because you will be spoiled if you continue reading.

Season 9 of Grey's Anatomy is scheduled to begin on September 27th and while the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, has given details concerning the fates of some characters, she hasn't and won't say much of anything when it comes to the character Arizona Robbins (played by Jessica Capshaw).

I'll get into what Rhimes said in an interview in just a bit, but first, let's go back to the season 8 finale. We last saw Arizona trying to keep Mark, who was in bad shape, awake by telling him that Callie and Sofia were waiting for them back home. Arizona wasn't in the best of shape either because she ended up with a really bad leg wound (you could see the bone) and coughing up blood which would indicate internal bleeding. The episode ended with them (Arizona, Mark, Cristina, Meredith and Derek) still in the woods and Lexie dead from her injuries.

Ok...let's get to what this post is actually about and that is the fate of Arizona Robbins. Why am I focusing on her and not the others? Well, in an interview with the The Hollywood Reporter, Rhimes said that she could confirm that Derek, Meredith and Cristina survive. Before that interview, it was announced that Eric Dane (Mark) is leaving the show. It's not known if the character will leave Seattle or die, but I'm going to guess that he dies from his injuries. In the same interview with THR, Rhimes talks about Dane's exit:

"I'm really proud of the way we're handing his exit. I really wanted and fought for that character to be given their due. I didn't want to come back to this season and say, "Mark Sloane is gone." I really wanted to give that character his due and we came up with a beautiful and creative way to showcase that and that goodbye."

However, the one character she didn't want to talk about much was Arizona. From the same interview, she was asked "Which leaves Arizona, who wasn't in great shape in the season finale. What's her heath status like when the season picks up?" Rhimes' response:

"I don't know that I want to talk about Arizona."

The interviewer asked another question concerning Arizona about how her fate will impact Callie. Her response to that question:

"It's going to impact her hugely. We're going to spend a lot of time with Callie this season, there's a lot of story to be told there."

Just from those two answers, I thought for sure that Arizona wasn't going to survive and I know I wasn't the only one. I mean, can you just imagine what that would be like for Callie? Mark is leaving and if Arizona leaves too, that would leave Callie heartbroken with a daughter to raise by herself. Surely, Rhimes wouldn't do that to Callie, right? Right?!

Even Jessica Capshaw wasn't giving away anything when she tweeted (thanks to Grey's Gabble for capturing the tweet!) "Dear Grey's fans...Stop trying to trick me into telling you if I am going back to work soon ;) I'm not spilling the beans... xx Jessica" back on July 14th. She still hasn't said anything about working on GA, so she's good keeping all of us guessing!

However, things are looking a bit better for Arizona because there are rumors circulating that while she will survive, she will end up losing part of her leg that was injured in the plane crash.

If I remember right, what started these rumors was a call sheet for season 9. Jessica Capshaw is on the sheet and on bottom right hand corner of the sheet, "AZ's L leg" can be seen listed under props. You can see the call sheet HERE thanks to Grey's Gabble.

Grey's Gabble also posted a Facebook posting which shows a casting company looking for a white female Amputee "with her left leg missing mid thigh." If you put two and two together, one can assume that Arizona will survive, but will have to lose part of her left leg.

There is a third piece of evidence that could prove the rumor to be true. Over at TVLine.com, Michael Ausiello hints at Arizona losing her leg.

Question: Please, I’m dying for some Grey’s Anatomy scoop, anything will be good. Thank you. — Mateo
Ausiello: I’m hearing some really cryptic rumors about the fate of a beloved character that makes me think this title has less to do with death and more to do with… something else.

For anyone wondering about the title of the first episode of season 9, it is Going Going Gone. Could Ausiello believe that the title is hinting that Arizona's leg will be gone? It's sure looking that way, but we'll know for sure when season 9 begins on September 27th.

I do know one thing, if Arizona survives, but in the process loses her leg, it won't be an easy road for her or Callie and it'll be an interesting storyline, that's for sure. However, Rhimes did say she was calling this season the Season of Romance, so hopefully Callie and Arizona (if she survives!) gets to experience some of that romance. Bring on season 9!
